This page is really about you. If you have a story or
something to say, we want to hear it!
Veterans
Scotland is the lead organisation for veterans' issues in
Scotland and is able to lobby and represent the interests of
veterans at the highest levels. Visit their website for
further details of what they are doing on your behalf.
Veterans First Point is local to Lothian and aims to
provide on the ground support to Lothians based ex-service
personnel and their families. We are connected into the
widest network of support organisations that can, between them,
provide whatever support you need to move forward with your life as
a civilian.
Anyone who has served for more than 1 day in the military,
territorials, reserves or merchant navy in support of military
operations is classified as a veteran.
Under a new scheme "The
Nation's Commitment: Cross Government Support to Our Armed Forces,
their Families and Veterans" (2008), there are many initiatives
aimed at making the transition to a civilian life easier.
This scheme identifies and provides further support in the
following areas:
Armed Forces Compensation Scheme;
Medical;
Housing;
Benefits;
Vocational;
Educational;
Transport.
Further information about these commitments can be found at
www.mod.uk
under the service community page. The HIVE is also a really
good source of information on support to veterans.

At Veterans First Point, we are committed to learning from
you in order to improve the services we provide. We are also a two
year research project trying to establish the number and nature of
the needs of the veterans' community in Lothians.
The aim of this research is to help determine the future
strategy for supporting veterans and their families in Scotland so
anything you have to say will inform the debate.
